Client Disclosure

Last updated: September 26, 2026

Insurance regulators expect you to know who you are dealing with, how your advisor is paid and how to raise a concern. This disclosure covers that. When you submit an application online, you confirm you have read it. You may be asked to sign additional consents and disclosures when you apply for a specific product.

Who you are dealing with

The insurers we work with

Philip is an independent agent. He is contracted with several insurance companies and is not tied to any single one. They include:

  • Assumption Life
  • Canada Protection Plan (CPP)
  • Desjardins Financial Services
  • Empire Life
  • Equitable Life of Canada
  • Foresters Financial
  • Humania Assurance
  • iA Financial Group
  • ivari
  • RBC Insurance
  • Beneva (formerly SSQ Insurance)
  • UV Insurance

This list is a sample and changes over time. Ask for the current list at any time. Neither Philip nor Affinity Life Inc. owns any part of an insurance company, and no insurer owns any part of Affinity Life Inc.

How we are paid

You don't pay us a fee. When a policy is issued, the insurance company pays Philip a commission, which is included in the premium you pay. Commission is usually paid when the policy starts, and some insurers also pay ongoing (renewal) commission. Commission rates differ between insurers and products. Philip may also qualify for bonuses or other incentives from insurers or the agency he is contracted through, based on the business he places. You can ask what compensation applies to a product we recommend, and we will tell you.

Conflicts of interest

Because commission rates differ between insurers, a conflict of interest can arise. Philip recommends plans based on your needs, eligibility and price, not on compensation. For climbers and mountain athletes, that often means combining simplified-issue plans from several insurers to avoid sports exclusions or rated premiums. If a specific conflict arises with your application, we will tell you before you apply.

Needs analysis

Before you choose a coverage amount and term, we offer a needs analysis. You can decline it or choose a different amount. If you do, our recommendation will be based only on the information you gave us, and you are responsible for deciding that the coverage fits your needs.

Your application

  • Answer every question fully and truthfully. If information is incomplete or inaccurate, the insurer can change or cancel your policy or deny a claim, most commonly within the first two years.
  • The insurance company, not Philip or Affinity Life, decides whether to offer coverage and at what price.
  • Your application is completed and signed electronically in your province of residence, which must be a province where Philip is licensed.
  • Most individual life insurance policies give you a review period after the policy is delivered, usually 10 days. During it you can cancel and get a full refund of premiums paid. Check your policy for its exact terms.

Electronic records and communication

Client files are kept electronically, as regulators require. Some of the software used to quote, apply and store records is provided by companies outside Canada, and information stored there is subject to the laws of those countries (see our Privacy Policy). By applying, you agree that we may contact you by phone, email and text about your application and policy.

Errors and omissions insurance

Philip carries errors and omissions (professional liability) insurance, as licensed agents are required to in the provinces where he is licensed.

Concerns and complaints

  1. Contact Philip first at philip@affinitylife.ca. We will acknowledge your complaint promptly and try to resolve it.
  2. If it concerns your policy or a claim, every insurer has its own complaint process and ombudsman, which you will find in your policy documents.
  3. If it's still not resolved, the OmbudService for Life & Health Insurance (OLHI) offers free, independent help.
  4. If it concerns an agent's conduct, you can contact the insurance regulator in your province (listed above).
